My workout routine at the gym

Ever since I had my first baby, I have struggled with my weight. That baby weight is not easy to shift – throwing in my love of cake & pizza – you can maybe see my problem! Last year {makes it sound ages ago by saying that} I started the gym with that firstborn I previously mentioned and a friend. So I thought I would share my workout routine.

I didn’t sign up to the gym with the intention of losing weight, I refuse to live my life bound to the obsession of fighting the flab – it keeps me warm in the winter after all! I decided to go to the gym because I want to be healthier and fitter.

At the grand old age of 38, my day-to-day fitness consists of school runs, walks with the kids, running around the house putting away laundry and so on. It’s not exactly doing 100 press-ups followed by a 3-mile run! Nevertheless, going to the gym 2-3 times a week has felt amazing {as well as exhausting!}.

Over the last few weeks, I have been noticing a difference in my stamina – so I thought it would fun to share with you the workout routine that I do at the gym. 

Treadmill

I start on the treadmill. When I started at the gym, I used to run-walk-run then walk again. Which is sort of the same steps you’d apply if doing your Couch 2 5 K. Since then, I have been using the fat burner option on the treadmill, which is 30mins of walking at different speeds and inclines. I have found this to be so much more effective than the running. If the state of my legs after the first time is anything to go by – I used muscles I literally never thought existed. 

Rowing Machine

I love the rowing machine. It is definitely one of my favourite machines to add to my workout routine. I put it on level 5 and then I will row for 2000m. It started out at 1000m, then went up to 1500m and I am happy doing 2000m until I can do it in under 9minutes. My current time frame is 12:24secs. So I have some serious time to catch up, but I’m in no rush. I’d rather build my stamina and fitness gradually, than risk injuring myself. 

Cycling

Like the rowing machine, I love the cycling machines too – more so the one with the back support, I find these so much easier to go on. I keep it on a 2/3 setting and then cycle for 3miles. I would like to start cycling for 5miles from my next gym session as I feel like I have been doing 3miles for long enough now. 

Abdominal crunches

Moving onto the weights. I have had two c-sections & one elective section – so my abdominal muscles are shot to hell. I noticed this when I was asked to do a plank {evil things} & felt as though my abdomen was going to tear apart. So, I am focusing on strengthening up those core abdominal muscles by doing 3 reps of 20 crunches on 30lbs. Followed by 3 reps of 20 crunches on 40lbs. 

For now, that’s my routine at the gym. I don’t have long, maybe an hour to workout because we walk down {2 miles} and then walk home, which is another two miles. So by the time I get home, I have around 30mins before I have the school pick-up to do. 

I am currently quite happy with my workout routine, I will be gradually changing things up when I feel the times are right. As well as increasing the distance and so on. But for now, I am easing myself back into making the gym a habit – which isn’t always easy – but it’s certainly easier going with my eldest son and our friend. Gym buddy’s make every pedal, step & row, that little bit easier. Plus, it’s nice to have someone to keep the pace with!

    Sounds like you have a great workout plan. I love using the rowing machine. I feel like I get such a buzz after using it!

    I have been on my Fitness Journey for almost two years and going strong, it is good to find out what works best for yourself and stick with it. I workout 6 days always like to leave one just for a nice rest day.

    Fair play to you. It’s so hard to find the time to do these things, but sometimes you just have to do it.

    I’m so bad – I’ve never been to the gym. Like, ever! After reading about your routine though, I’m seriously considering giving it a try 🙂
