“Don’t Get Chesty!” Looking After Your Asthma

A healthy lifestyle gives you the opportunity to make the most of every day, but when you have an underlying health condition that can, in a physical sense, stop you you achieving your potential, it can be very frustrating. Asthma is something that many people grow out of, but for those who don’t, it can prove to be a very frustrating aspect of life stopping you being your best. For example, if you want to get fit, but your chest won’t let you push that little bit further. And with this in mind, when it comes to managing, or even trying to cure your asthma, are there any things that we can all think of to make life even more bearable or get rid of it completely?

Assessing Your Triggers

One of the major aspects of asthma is minimising the triggers. Everybody has different asthma triggers, but when you are in your own home, if you can minimise them there, you will stand a better chance of looking after your chest. There could be things in the home you might not have thought, such as the air conditioning system, and making sure that this is cleaned regularly. On the other hand, if you’ve got pets, ensuring that the property is clean, or even just keeping on top of your medication are things that can minimise irritation. As soon as you start to assess your own triggers, this is when you will stand a better chance of fighting it completely.

Alternative Methods

Although there may not be proof that alternative methods work effectively and they don’t come highly recommended, it is worth experimenting with specific herbs and dietary supplements. There have been studies looking at Magnesium, Vitamins A, D, and C, but you have got to be sure that you’re not taking too much of the vitamins. As well as this, you could try minimising your stress. Stress is something that could trigger asthma symptoms, so you could find methods to minimise stress. But if you are taking asthma medication, you need to make sure that you are still taking these alongside the alternative methods. Specific breathing exercises could work as well, and alternative practices like Buteyko breathing has been shown to drastically reduce asthma symptoms, and even get rid of it because of different ways of breathing. People with breathing difficulties tend to breathe through the mouth rather than the nose, and Buteyko works on breathing through the nose.

Natural Remedies

A lot of people are trying to go down the natural route of managing their symptoms in general, especially when it comes to something like inflammation. A lot of people try to avoid specific foods that trigger asthma attacks. But this is all about looking at your own allergies. As well as this, you may want to think about acupuncture. And while there is little proof that acupuncture works to treat asthma, those that have aggressive symptoms have said that it has a positive effect on their asthma.

Because asthma can have a far-reaching effect on many aspects of your life, it’s important to find ways to look after it.
