How to make your own Soft Homemade Bread Rolls

Bread. The staple in 100% of the Irish diet – of this I can confirm. I personally love my bread and I do have a preference believe it or not. But it also depends on the mood – are you like that? I mean, I adore a bit of buttered wheaten bread with a cup of tea, or perhaps a few slices of a Tiger Bloomer with a side order of smoky bacon crisps {and of course, a cup of tea!}. So we’ve established my love of bread and I have always wanted to get into the routine of making my own on a regular basis. I’ve built it up in my head that it’s harder than it looks {which it isn’t} or perhaps more hassle than buying a loaf from the shop.

We are quite a big family, there are five of us at home most days and when my two sons make an appearance {who are young men now} we are a family of seven. That’s a lot of mouths to feed! And I love dishing out everything into oven dishes for everyone to help themselves. It’s the most effective way when you have a big family like ours. So on evenings when I’ve whipped up a load of chicken or beef burgers or even a big pot of stew, I love being able to dish out some deliciously soft homemade bread rolls for my gang to enjoy too.

Baps, Rolls, Cobs and Barms!

I have to make one adjustment, in Northern Ireland, we call them ‘baps’, not ‘rolls’. However, I am adhering to my largely UK mainland based audience by saying rolls as I’m sure half of you use an array of other terms such as ‘cob’ or ‘barm’. Anyway, different bread names aside, this recipe is super simple, easy for you to whip together in among the madness that is daily life and I really hope you give this recipe a go. I adore it and my kids really love how soft these fluffy little morsels are too!

They’re also great to make in batches for the school lunches for the week ahead! Nothing like winning at life and being prepared, eh! School packed lunches are fun in the beginning, but then the novelty dwindles, so having things already prepped is an absolute joy to my ears. And I’m pretty sure I am not alone in thinking that!

Also, thinking back, the last time I made bread was over our first lockdown and before that? I made these adorable Breakfast Bunny Bread Buns a good few years ago. So much fun to make, so check them out for something fun to dish up to the kids.
