Homemade Cat treats for National Love your Pet day!

Who knew there were so many ‘days’ throughout the year to be celebrated. From National Pizza Day, St. Patrick’s Day, World Earth day and there is even a National Love your Pet day! Isn’t that fun!?

If you don’t know already, we own a Cat called Sega and a free-roam house rabbit called Hopper. After Sheriff Hopper from Strangers Things of course! And we love them both dearly. Sega adopted us as her very own humans almost two years ago now {she will be 3 this summer} and we’ve had Hopper since he was a tiny 10wk old bun and he’ll be celebrating his 3rd birthday this Halloween.

You’re maybe wondering that having a predator/prey relationship inside the house is a crazy move! And you’d be right! It wasn’t something we had planned because we did have Hopper first. Nor did we expect to be adopted by this little black cat one evening mid-November, either. But you have to roll with the punches, right? And it turns out Sega & Hopper don’t actually mind each other. Per-say!

Sega just goes where she pleases {hello! Cat life!} and Hopper will nudge and chase her out of his territory {which is upstairs}. To which Sega will just hop onto a windowsill and mock poor Hopper from above. On occasion, I have found them grooming each other which is such a lovely sight to see. They also love playing in the garden together, too. Such a funny troublesome twosome to come across but so lovely to see at the same time.

So, for Love your Pet Day I’ve chosen to make Sega some delicious homemade cat treats. I’ve chosen Sega because a rabbits diet is a little more complex than a cats diet and I don’t want to risk upsetting his wee stomach.

This recipe for Homemade cat treats I came across on Pinterest, from the lovely All roads lead to the Kitchen blog and I knew I had to give them a go. It makes a batch of up to 200 treats and can be made in no time at all. Let’s get started, shall we?

Homemade Chicken and Cranberry Cat treats

Really simple to make, however, I will be totally honest…my blender went on fire! Like…on fire! It was pretty old {5yrs old maybe?} and was a cheap appliance. So I’m putting those two factors down to its spontaneous combustion! Thankfully, everything had combined before the setting on fire moment – so YAY for that! Also, must note that I need a blender!

These Homemade cat treats went down an absolute storm with Sega. The catnip really enticed her, then she got a whiff of the chicken and she was happy. I just popped mine into an Ikea jar – I mean, who doesn’t have an abundance of glass Ikea jars! I know I do as they are so useful!

You can read all about the night she adopted us here. But, long story short, she came from the streets and thought she was only worthy of the floor {for months!} even though we had bought her a bed. Lying on the cold, hard ground was normal for her and watching her just accept that, was heartbreaking.

But watching her slowly, over the course of several months, learn and realise that she was worth so much more than a cold, hard floor. Watching her realise that she could sleep on a warm, comfy bed of her own – or one of the other beds in the house {which she soon learned existed!}. Was nothing short of heart-warming.

It has taken her a long time to trust us as her humans but now? We cannot get enough of the head butts and the slow blinks. We adore her tail twitches as she walks towards us for cuddles and her grooming us. In hindsight, we could do without the generous ‘gifts’ – but we’re grateful for them anyway. Even the huge pigeon we found in our kitchen one day after leaving the window open!

Her biggest hurdle, however, that she has only started doing recently has been the biggest form of acceptance. Sega has started to sleep on our laps – which is something, in the 18mths we have had her, has never done. She has also started to ‘knead’ which is another trait she never did. Which made me sad, but she is slowly learning and maybe not so much the drooling that comes with it! But it’s all exciting to watch it all unfold. It’s like she is learning how to be a ‘proper’ cat – if that’s even the right term. Or maybe just what we associate cats to be like or behave like. Either way? It’s adorable and we just love her and I’m so glad she followed me home on that cold November night in 2018.
