We were adopted by a cat | Meet Sega

A month or so before Christmas, one evening I was walking to our local shop – like I do countless times and I was greeted by the sweetest black cat. She had the cutest nature and approached me as she knew me. I stroked her, and spoke to her {like we all do to animals – don’t try to deny it!} and then continued to go to the shop.

Little did I think, that when I came out she would be waiting for me. When I greeted her again, she was sweet as pie, all purr and rubbing up against me, then after a few minutes, I started my walk home. Cats generally follow you for a little bit then go on their merry way. This little miss stuck with me, all the way to my front door.

When the door opened, she walked in as if it was her home. I wasn’t entirely sure what to do – she didn’t have a collar but that didn’t mean she didn’t have a home of her own. The kids were so excited, so we gave her shelter for the night, some food and when morning came and she left – we didn’t think we’d ever see her again.

That evening, it was torrential rain – like pouring out of the heavens torrential rain and we noticed this little black cat on our windowsill, trying to capture our attention. We opened the door, she came in – again, like it was her home.

I continued to have this niggling feeling that she may have had a home of her own, somewhere. So I took her photo and shared it on a local lost animal/pet facebook page. Luckily she was recognised as ‘Bear’, a local cat, only 18mths old but she came with a story.

Sega the Cat

She did have an owner but didn’t get along with her siblings. So…Bear decided to live on the streets. The lady tried to find a new owner for her, but with no luck – this young cat continued to fear her siblings and chose to remain on the streets.

That is, until the night she met me on my shop run…

Just to let you know…I have been in touch with the owner! I haven’t run off with someone else’s cat {like some folk on social media assumed} Aren’t humans funny at times? Anyway, she was more than pleased to pass ownership onto us and also thankful that Bear now has a home.

And just like that…we had a new family member.

She has the nicest nature but due to being a street cat {for goodness knows how long!} never let herself have nice things. When she started living with us, she would only ever sleep on the floor. After a few weeks, we finally got her sleeping on a blanket. Then my Husband placed her blanket on a bed for her and voila – she is now living her best life.

Sega the Cat

We decided to name her Sega, as in Seegaaa! Nerdy, I know! Also, since being with us she has been chipped, vaccinated, spayed and she has made this house…our house...her home.

She has also lost 2 collars & would rather play with balls of paper & the lids of milk cartons than any of her toys. As well as having a love for my chair rather than her bed! But her love of hairbands and her uncanny ability to lose collars aside…she is very loved.

We’re kinda touched that she chose us because that’s exactly what she did. She chose us to be her humans, her family and even though Hopper the rabbit has her tortured {she doesn’t quite know what to make of him!} she still calls this her home.

Have you ever had an experience like this before? Or have any tips on how to keep a collar on a cat? Chuckle…

PIN IT FOR LATER!

  • I have a habit of cats falling in love with me, particularly black cats. At one point, we had 4 cats; 3 black and 1 tuxedo. Unfortunately we are down to only the tuxedo. It’s is amazing how the cat chooses it’s owner. That’s the only way they will truly be your best friend. Enjoy Sega!
