Hopper our pet rabbit

Around 18mths ago our home went from housing 2 adults and 3 children to 2 adults, 3 children and a rabbit. A rabbit would never have been a pet I would have envisioned us ever having, but now Hopper is apart of our family, we couldn’t imagine the house without him. Petplan has asked us to share our PetHood stories with you, so here goes…

Hopper came to live with us when he was just 10weeks old. Cute! He had the softest fur and the biggest ears. We all fell in love with him instantly and named him Hopper. {After Sheriff Hopper from Stranger Things – naturally!}

Did you know that the Petplan Pet Census 2018 44% of people refer to their pet as “baby” and 41% refer to them as their “best friend” and rightly so! We dote on Hopper so much because he loves his cuddles as much as we love to give them to him. Which, for a rabbit, is a pretty amazing bond to have built with him. We have had him from he was 10 weeks old and now he will be two this October – it didn’t take that long to bond with him, but it’s lovely to see how that relationship has bloomed.

Over the last 18mths, Hopper has grown, massively. We think at this point he has grown as much as he ever will – which is good as his butt has gotten BIG! He used to love hiding underneath the chests of drawers upstairs, but with his big fluffy bunny butt, those days are gone!

His big butt and massive ears aside, Hopper’s personality does nothing but shine. It makes you feel really appreciated when you walk upstairs and he gets all excited and runs around your feet in circles. Or, he will immediately just lunge at you for some grooming time when you lay down next to him. Hopper loves his grooming sessions! Let’s not leave out the ‘binkies’ which is the sign of a truly happy bunny! It’s like a run, with a little hop, slight body twist of excitement – it’s the cutest thing. It’s also lovely being able to see how comfortable he is by looking at his feet.

His feet you say? With rabbits, they like to stretch out and the more they stretch out the more comfortable they are and the safer they feel in their environment. Him feeling safe and comfortable is everything to us because this is his house too and it’s so important that he feels comfortable in his own home. Hopper is an indoor ‘free roam’ rabbit which is lovely! Our back garden isn’t the greatest, so having him indoors and safe is a comfort.

This is when he was little and used to spread out in his litter tray {little fluffy weirdo!}

We do let get him out into the front garden whenever we can. He absolutely loves it! But I do worry that he could pick up diseases when he’s venturing about the garden – with other animals that may wander through. I also worry, even though he is constantly supervised when he’s outside, that he could just bolt {not that he ever has!} but these things happen. So, in case anything unfortunate did happen, it’s comforting to know that Petplan Pet Insurance can give you that peace of mind.

Pethood stories

Hopper, pet rabbit

Hopper is very much a part of the family. So much so that he even has his own festive wear to show-off over Halloween and Christmas. Have you ever seen a bunny in Bat wings or a Christmas jumper? It’s all you really ever need to see. The cuteness is literally, too much!

He’s even partial to a party hat! He’s such a cute, fluffy and loveable little dude and even though he has chewed his way through hundreds of pounds {literally} worth of cables – we couldn’t be without him.

If you have a lovely story to share, you can share your own Pethood Stories of your pet for a chance to appear on the Petplan website.

  • Oh these cuties! My children are really nagging for pets and we’re thinking about buying them a pet – good to know about this insurance, such a piece of mind.

  • Oh my gosh Hopper is the cutest!!! We used to have two pet rabbits (Mabel and Edith) who sadly passed away last year. They were definitely part of the family and loved so much, having decent insure for beloved pets is essentail! x

  • Oh isn’t he adorable?! I used to love having a pet rabbit as a child (even if my parents ended up having to do most of the ‘looking after’!) 🙂

  • Love that you take him for walks – we looked after the school rabbits last summer and they dug up half the garden

  • Awww what a cute bunny! I sadly don’t have a pet (we both work FT and are out most of the day so it would be unfair. I love visiting my friends who have pets though 🙂
