5 rainy day activities to do with your children | AD
Where you are, wherever in the world, has it felt like the rain will never stop? Here in the UK, it feels like it’s been raining constantly for months. There’s been flooding, lots of puddle jumping, and endless soggy socks. Over our recent half-term school holidays, it rained for the entire week! THE ENTIRE WEEK! So having a good selection of rainy day activities to do with your children is always a great idea.
I have three children at home of all different ages, 14, 11 & 7 – so having three different ages can make keeping them entertained tricky. The job is to find something everyone can enjoy, regardless of their age. But you knew that already! It’s finding that balance that’s the hardest part. I often find it purely by luck, if I don’t you can find me in the cupboard eating all of the chocolate & hiding from the bickering children. You know those moments I am talking about!
However, hiding in cupboards & possibly bickering children aside…
Here are 5 rainy-day activities to do with your children
Have a baking day/baking competition
I love this idea. I enjoy baking and my two girls enjoy baking. My son, Jacob not so much – his deal is when he sees everyone else having fun and he’s not a fan of being left out. So he will begrudgingly join in and end up having the best time. It happens every time with this kid, you can read him like a book!
Together, you could whip up a selection of treats. You could make a pie for dinner, or a cake for dessert. Perhaps try my Mint aero cheesecake recipe {it’s delicious} or maybe the kids would enjoy making these tasty Nutella puff tarts.
Make it interesting and have a baking competition! Everyone wins because there will be a selection of delicious cakes and buns to enjoy over many, many cups of juice and/or tea.
Look into subscription boxes
Have you ever heard of Sago Mini subscription box? Me neither until recently but they’re quite adorable. I also love the idea of having a fun, engaging and educational box of fun delivered right to your door.
These Sago Mini boxes are aimed at preschoolers {aged 3-5yrs} and each box is filled with make-and-play activities. It’s all about learning through play and I am all for that form of education. It is a method I have used for years and still use with my own children.
There are lots of choices when it comes to tailoring the Sago Mini Box that fits your child. Subscription box choices such as a Pet Cafe, Planes, Fairytales and even a Space explorer.
I personally love the idea of a pet cafe. It gives your child a taste of running their very own restaurant with cats, dogs and rabbits as your guests.
Have an indoor movie afternoon & picnic!
My kids love having movie days and indoor picnics! Sometimes it’s the only option to make something fun with a dark and dreary day. Would you agree? Decide on your menu – will it be sandwiches and a selection of cocktail sausages and sausage rolls {our personal favourite} – not forgetting the crisps and cheeky biscuit as a treat.
Give them all a task, a job that is there’s to achieve. Whether it’s to make the carpet all comfy & cosy for everyone to settle down on. Someone else can sort out plates, cutlery and drinks. Finally, the most special job of all is choosing the movie you’re all going to watch. This usually causes all of the arguments in our house. But thankfully, we have a select amount of movies/TV shows that we all enjoy together.
Throw a Nerf war!
Another one of our favourite rainy day activities! I am that Mum who will leave a note and a Nerf gun by the door for when the kids get home from school. It will read something along the lines of “Welcome home from school! This nerf is loaded and yours. I have one too and you’re under attack as of NOW! Good luck. Mum”.
It is the best fun, ammo ends up everywhere! The kids do nothing but squeal in excitement, laugh at their victorious shots or cry because they’ve taken a foam bullet to the eye – this happens a lot! I really should invest in some protective eyewear for these moments in our house. Just a heads up if you’re considering it!
Anyways, nerf wars are epic. Fast-paced, lots of fun and could be a good idea to do before settling down for a picnic and a movie!
Play board games!
We adore board games in this house. Such as Dobble, Avocado Smash, Uno {a classic!} and even Pokemon monopoly and more.
We have a decent selection. But they are always a good last resort option for when the bickering has got too much or everyone just needs a good distraction from the gloominess outside. So wipe out the board games, maybe even a few snacks and have some fun as the rain pours down!
