Best Places to Celebrate the Chinese New Year

If you love celebrating New Year’s Eve, then why not also join in with celebrating the Chinese New Year? Chinese New Year 2018 is the Year of the Dog and the festivities will be a lot of fun. You can watch parades, traditional dancing, see fireworks, and eat delicious Chinese food. There are many places in the world that host traditional Chinese New Year celebrations and here are some of the best places to go.

Beijing, China

If you are thinking of going on a holiday to China, then try and coincide your visit with the New Year celebrations. Beijing is China’s capital, and the year of the Dog celebrations will take place from the 15th of February to the 21st of February. The residents of Beijing will try to come home to have a traditional New Year’s Eve dinner. Try to wear red; the colour red symbolizing happiness, fortune, power, and vitality, will be seen everywhere in decorations or clothes.

There will be a fireworks display, temple fairs and flower shows. Folk performances such as dragon and lion dance can also be witnessed. Longtan Fair is another event to visit as the crowd that comes there can also participate in activities such as table tennis, chess, Chinese yo-yo, and rock climbing. Other places to visit are The Old Summer Palace (Yuanmingyuan) and Chaoyang International Carnival.

Vancouver, Canada

Vancouver is known for its Chinese New Year’s Parade. The city has a large Chinatown, which is the place to head to join in with the other tens of thousands of people enjoying Chinese New Year. The parade has the largest assembly of lion dances and you can expect over 50,000 spectators. The Year of the Dog Temple Fair will be held on February 18th at the International Village. You can listen to Chinese music, shop, and eat authentic Chinese food during this fair. You can also enjoy New Year activities at Canada Place and Lonsdale Quay.

Los Angeles, California

Chinatown in Los Angeles has been seen in several Hollywood movies and the iconic landmarks are familiar to many people. The Chinese New Year celebrations attract crowds of more than 100 thousand people. There are several events that take place during the Chinese New Year. Some of the noted places to visit are Disneyland, Monterey Park, Citadel outlets, Beverly Hills and Universal Studios Hollywood. Watch the Golden Dragon Parade in La’s Chinatown and visit the Huntington Library Gardens to see martial arts, Chinese dances and listen to traditional Chinese music.

Shanghai, China

Shanghai celebrates the New Year in both traditional and modern ways. The traditional events usually take place in Yu Gardens and the Bund. Red is the colour of fortune and you will see it on every corner. The residents also engage in gambling during this time of the year and it is not frowned upon. The Longhua Temple celebrates the New Year with the Buddhist monks striking a bell at midnight to start the year. A few other events to see are Himalayas Center Lantern Festival, Shanghai Disney Chinese New Year Celebration and Guyi Garden Spring Festival Fair.

London, UK

If you’ve ever visited London, you’ll know that there is always something exciting going on, and exploring London is always a fun way to spend a weekend. The Chinese New Year is celebrated across London, in 2018 the Chinese New Year will fall on the 16th of February and the celebrations in London will take place on the 18th.

Leicester Square is the place to be for a foodie who is looking for Chinese fare. Trafalgar Square hosts the main stage with exciting performances. Other performances can be found on Shaftesbury venue and Charing Cross Road. Activities like calligraphy, traditional dressing, martial arts, pyrotechnic displays, and traditional Chinese music will also be a part of the celebrations. London’s Chinatown is a great place for authentic Chinese shopping and food.

    A trip to London with the family has been planned for my birthday and I think we might tie it in with Chinese New Year so we can see what London has to offer!
