13 links to help when teaching your kids from home
I think we can all agree, that the world has gone a little crazy, right? Pubs and restaurants closing, countries on lockdown and we’re now taking steps to homeschool our children. I get it. I, myself took my gang from their school because I disagree with how our so-called ‘leaders’ are handling it all.
Making the decision to take them out of school wasn’t an easy decision to make. It was a very ‘should I?’ or ‘shouldn’t I?’ moment for a good while. But then I realised how poorly it was all being handled and schools not being closed despite pubs, restaurants and even countries were being put on lockdown. But it was OK for our children to go to school? I don’t think so.
So, I made the decision to remove them. I sent in notes to ask for anything they have put together for them to complete at home and I would just sort out the rest. Which is why I thought I would share this post that includes 20 links to websites to help you when teaching your kids from home.
I thought I would also mention that I am no teaching expert, I am just keen to help my children learn. Saying that one thing about bringing them out of school, I am terrified they will fall behind, which I am sure is at the forefront of all of our minds. Teaching is a skill, a skill which I am so not qualified to do but in the situation, all I/we can do is our best. I love the websites I have shared throughout this blog post and I truly believe they are great teaching platforms when it comes to home learning.
13 Links to help when teaching your children from home
Twinkl resources
This is an amazing website and one I have used for a good few years. It is filled with KS1, 2 & 3 worksheets and booklets. Meaning there are educational activity books and worksheets from 0-18 years. Twinkl is offering a free month {it costs me around £5.99 per month} due to the sudden rise in homeschooling.
Reading Eggs
This is another website we have used for a number of years. It is a really great motivational platform to help children learn how to read. They are encouraged to learn their phonics, sounds and tricky words all while having fun. They can earn golden eggs, decorate their avatars home and even print off certificates when they’re earned. My daughter loves Reading Eggs and is on it daily.
Mathseeds
This is the numerical side of the reading eggs website. My Annabelle really enjoys doing her numbers and she loves Math seeds. It teaches children aged 3 to 9yrs and there are 35 activities per level.
BBC Bitesize
BBC Bitesize is a fabulous website with an array of helpful resources. All ranging from Ks1 to GCSE level. Suitable for ages from 3 to 16+yrs.
Consortium Education
Consortium Education is a new website that I only came across myself due to it being sponsored on Facebook. But they are offering a KS1 and a KS2 104 page home learning activity booklets for you to print off, free of charge. We are using them already for my Primary 3 & Primary 7 children and they’re really good.
EdPlace
This is a great learning platform, allowing your children to learn everything from their ABC’s to their GCSE’s. Edplace is not a free website, sadly. However, you can buy a trial version for £1 to see if you like it then it will cost £66 per annum.
DuoLingo
Even though, for my Primary school-aged children, languages aren’t in their daily learning {yet}. I don’t think there is any harm to starting now, especially since Jacob will be learning it come September when he starts high school anyway. Why not give him a head start, right? Duolingo is totally free and you can learn an array of different languages.
Kidztype
We have yet to use this platform, but you can be sure I will be adding it onto my children’s home learning timetable for next week. Kidztype is a really cool platform to teach your child how to touch type. I know this may sound like an ineffectual skill, but believe me, it can be an invaluable one with certain career paths. It is also free to use.
Topmarks
Topmarks is a great website that has a great selection of activities and worksheets that are free to download and print.
Oxford Owl
We only came across this website when I started home learning my kids this last week and it’s been really helpful. Oxford Owl is full of helpful activities and printables.
Go Noodle
Go Noodle is a dance-focused youtube channel and it is so much fun. It is like Just Dance for the Wii, but with real people teaching you the moves!
Cosmic Kids
During our morning timetable, we break to do a bit of Yoga together and Cosmic Kids is perfect. It gets the kids away from the table for a little bit {each video is around 20 mins along} and the kids have really been enjoying it.
Art for Kids Hub
I love incorporating Art into my child’s day and Jacob especially has been benefiting from this on his timetable. It’s some his Primary 7 class have been focusing on lately which I can only assume is to prepare him for High school this Autumn. Art for Kids Hub is perfect for Jacob because he really enjoys the whole step by step process, so check it out if your child loves to be creative with a pencil and paper.
I hope these help you out when home learning your children – they’ve been a great help to us. Twinkl especially has been a saving grace and of course, Cosmic Kids has been a firm favourite too.
