Chocolate Swiss Roll | Recipe

I love swiss rolls. Love, love, love it and it has always been a dessert that I have wanted so badly to perfect. So this week that’s exactly what I have for you. My final result of my latest {and best} attempt at whisking up a delicious chocolate swiss roll.

Ingredients

For the sponge:

– 3 large eggs
– 100g of caster sugar
– 25g cocoa powder
– 75g plain flour
– 15ml of hot water
– Some caster sugar for rolling the sponge.

For the filling:

– Tub of fresh cream, ready-made {of you can make it yourself}.

For the finishing touch:

– Icing sugar to sieve on top.

Method

– Preheat your oven to 220 degrees C/425 F/Fan 200 C/Gas Mark 7 & line a 33.6cmx22.5cm swiss roll tin. I bought mine from Amazon.

– Put your eggs & your sugar into a bowl and whisk together until light & creamy. Making sure the mixture remains stiff with the impressions of the whisk before moving on to the next step. Sift together your flour and cocoa.

– Gently fold half of the flour mixture into the bowl using a metal spoon.

– Fold in the rest of the flour mixture making sure it is well combined and there are no lumps. Stir in the hot water.

– Pour the mixture into your swiss roll tin, smooth it over evenly & gently. Bake in the oven for 7-9 mins until well risen and golden brown.

– Whilst your oven is doing what it does best get a piece of parchment paper ready, sprinkle with some caster sugar. To make your sponge a little more pliable you can place the paper over a damp tea towel.

– Once the sponge is ready, remove from the oven and turn it out quickly onto the paper and trim the edges to be straight.

– Place the second sheet of parchment paper on top of the sponge & roll it up loosely using the sugared paper as a guide. Leave to cool completely on a rack, covered in paper.

To make the filling:

– Purchase a tube of whipping cream and whisk that up or if you’re pushed for time you can buy it already whipped up.

– When the sponge is completely cold gently unroll it & remove the parchment paper. Carefully spread the sponge with the cream & then re-roll.

Super light, super fluffy and super delicious! Don’t judge me, but I ate 2/3rds of this on my own! Shameful right? But I had one of ‘those’ days so I think we can forget I mentioned anything, right?

  • First day of a diet and I am now drooling and crying! Thanks for linking up to #tastytuesdays x

  • Awe that looks so yummy. I’ve always been too scared to make a Swiss roll in case it turns out to be a Swiss mess. And there is no shame in eating 2/3 on your own. I ate a whole packet of Jaffa cakes last night to myself without realising it :/

    Love the pics btw!
