Reasons to spend Christmas abroad this year {& where to go!}

I have always loved the idea of eloping for the festive season one year. No Christmas dinner to slave over, no elf on the shelf being the bane of my existence {although, I love them really!}. No Christmas morning rounds to do when really all you want to do is slob around in your jammies eating the children’s selection box chocolate. Let’s be honest, packing up and leaving home and doing Christmas abroad would be so much easier, right?

Maybe as a cheeky one-off, anyway…

However, where would you go? I’ll be truthful, I’ve thought about getting away over Christmas but never thought of where we’d like to go. Would we go somewhere with snow? Would we visit somewhere for a bit of December sun? Or perhaps head to a place with a little bit of both? 

Do we want to fly off to somewhere Christmassy? Or perhaps getting away from everything Christmas related and keeping it super low-key and chill is what we’re craving! 

So, I’ve had a good long think about 4 reasons to spend Christmas abroad this year and I’m about to share them with you. 

Budapest

If you’re wanting to keep Christmas alive while being away from home, then there is no better place than Hungary in December. Or so I’ve heard! 

You could wrap up warm and visit Vorosmarty Square which is known as the cities oldest Christmas market. With stalls full of Christmas decorations, delicious hot drinks, mountains of goulash and sauerkraut. 

You could even head to the nearby Opera House for a special festive showing of The Nutcracker. This is shown every Christmas in Budapest – have you ever seen it? 

Palma De Mallorca

You could head to sunnier climates for cocktails on the beach and a spot of jet-skiing! Now that I have the idea of having a picnic on a beach on Christmas day, I can’t think of anything else. 

Not having to worry about unwrapping gifts and being up to your eyes in wrapping paper. No turkey to baste every 30 mins and no cat to keep away from the baubles on the Christmas tree! If you have a cat, then you’ll know what I mean!

You could take a catamaran out onto the Balearic sea. Enjoy a little snorkelling with the kids and a spot of lunch on the waves. You cannot tell me that sounds like paradise! So if you’re looking for sunshine, sea and sand? Look into heading to Palma De Mallorca for your Christmas break.

British Columbia, Canada

BC in Canada has been one of my top 3 places to visit of all time. In fact, it may even be my top place to visit before anything else gets a look in! Alongside that? I’ve never skied in my life and I guess if I’m going to start? Nowhere better than British Columbia in Canada, right? 

With the most ski resorts in any province in Canada, I reckon you’re going to be spoilt for choice! British Columbia is also blessed with tonnes of soft, powdery snow and a moderate climate – you can also book cheap flights to Canada which is a delight to my ears. Can you relate? 

The Big Apple, New York, USA

Now, this suggestion of mine is purely due to my love of the movie Home Alone. But what a way to spend Christmas, right? Going for a walk around Central Park, go ice-skating at the Rocker-feller centre or go to the top of the Empire state building. Again, movie buff! Purely for the view, obviously, but to stand where that iconic ending in Sleepless in Seattle happened too! 

In reality, the choices of where to jet off to over Christmas are endless. I just love how adventurous of a choice it is and how much easier it would be over one of the craziest times of the year. Plus, Christmas is about making memories as a family. Those memories can be made around a Christmas tree at home or skiing down a snow-filled mountain in the Alps.
