Make your own Mermaid tail crayons – I did!
If you have been following me over on my Instagram grid, then you’ll know I am preparing for Annabelle’s 7th birthday party. This year? She’s asked for a Mermaid theme and thinking of new and fun things to pop into party bags isn’t easy and I always like to stay in a budget! In previous years I have done books, little plant pots and a bag of seeds and soil, I’ve done V-bucks {chocolate coins with a V-buck sticker on it} for the Fortnite fans and so on. This year? I wanted to give a little selection of goodies in the party bags and I thought making some Mermaid Tail crayons would be a fun idea.Â
Annabelle has an insane amount of crayons, most of which she never uses anymore because she’s obsessed with the twistable crayons you can get from Crayola? Best things ever. Love those and so does she. So, the old-fashioned paper-wrapped crayons {in our house anyway} are a thing of the past. This also means we needed to find an alternative use for them rather than throwing them away.Â
So, along with the ‘Under the sea’ themed pencils, chocolate starfish & bubbles. I thought by adding a Mermaid tail crayon would make them pretty special. As for the Pirates attending Annabelle’s birthday party, I found As I mentioned previously in the post about searching for ideas for the boys? – I found this insanely cool Pirate coin silicone mould on eBay and it’s been amazing. Check out my pirate doubloon crayons for the Pirates party bags!
To make your own Mermaid tail crayon is super easy and all you need are the following;
- A collection of unused and/or broken crayons
- An Oven-safe silicone mermaid tail mould
- Extra-fine glitter
- Cookie sheet or grease-proof paper
- Oven mitt
How to create your Mermaid tail shaped crayons
- Preheat your oven to 250 degrees and peel all of the paper from your crayons.Â
- Sprinkle the colour of glitter of your choice, into your moulds
- Break up your crayons into small pieces and position where you’d like them in the moulds.
- Place your silicone moulds onto your baking paper/tray and pop into the oven for 8-10 mins. Check at around 4-5mins to see if they’ve fully melted.
- Remove from the oven and place them on your sideboard until cool. Then pop into the freezer for 15 mins.
- To remove your crayons from the moulds, carefully stretch out the sides of the mould and pop your crayons out.
Simple as that!Â
I cannot believe how easy these Mermaid tail crayons were to make and I love how the glitter just gives them that extra effect, you know? Glitter always adds a little magic and I love it.Â
I did the first few myself and then in classic fashion, Annabelle got in on the fun because why should they miss out! Plus, I think it’s an amazing craft for the kids to get involved with – just not removing from the oven part! Those parts are for us parents!Â
Annabelle loved choosing her own colours and seeing her face once they were cooled and out of the mould? Was amazing! I also think it’s awesome that she had a hand in putting a part of her party together.
