AD | Coding Adventures with Awbie from Play Osmo

Learning to code sounds like a bit of a task, doesn’t it? I get it because let’s face it, it is! But in this day and age, I think coding will be available to learn in schools more and more, so why not get ahead of the game, right? Annabelle was made an honourary Osmonaut by the Play Osmo team last year. She was kindly sent out the Osmo Creative Kit & Genius kit to review and she loved them both. She still does! So it’s no surprise that she loves this Coding Adventures with Awbie kit, too.

Coding Adventures with Awbie from Osmo

This Coding with Awbie kit is aimed at children aged 5-12 yrs, so it grows with your child. It also teaches your child coding – just for the fun of it. It makes coding fun and I cannot tell you the feeling of just watching Annabelle code her way through Awbies strawberry-munching adventure!

The kit includes the following:

19 coding blocks
Coding Awbie game app
Stackable storage case

This kit, like the others, does not include the iPad/Tablet or Osmo base. The Osmo base, however, is provided in the Genius kit. The one thing I love about Osmo is that every game is aimed at a hands-on play approach. It’s super easy to set-up because all you have to do is download the Coding with Awbie app, set-up your tablet/iPad onto your Osmo base, place the red reflector over the device’s camera and off you go. It’s that simple.

Coding Adventures with Awbie teaches your child logic and problem-solving skills as well as maths and it makes computer science fun! The overall aim of the game is to discover Awbie’s world through code. Your job is to guide him through each level because you, the player, control Awbie’s actions. Awbie is a really cute and colourful little character and his one true love? Strawberries! Each level brings new problems for you to solve, collecting strawberries, jumping over logs and trying to grab critters as you go. Don’t forget to shake those trees, too!

Another awesome part of the Osmo brand is that even though the coding blocks are made from highly-durable plastic materials. If you accidentally lose one? They’ll replace it for free!

How much does it cost?

The Coding Adventures with Awbie kit costs £49.99 and OK, it’s not the cheapest. But do you know what? It’s worth every penny and more in my book. And I suppose that’s easy for me to say considering I have kindly been gifted this product in return for an honest review. But I mean it. It is a 100% sound investment for any child looking to learn something cool, like coding through play and heaps of strawberry based fun along the way!

Our thoughts?

I love this game and better still? Annabelle loves this game. Sometimes learning for children can seem like such a chore, right? But when she plays this? She loses all sense of time, she gets lost in Awbie’s world and she loves completing level after level. Watching her click the coding blocks together {which attach magnetically} is amazing. I also get updates from the Osmo Parent app, informing me of everything Annabelle has been up to.

For the Coding with Awbie app, it will tell me how many lines of code she has made, how any commands she has made and so on. Whether she has used a command using 1 line or more etc. It is very informative and it’s lovely to have that on-hand to keep up to date with.

The Osmo Parent app will inform you after any game has been played i.e Creativity, Coding, Spellings, Tangram etc. What they have created, how long they have played for and so forth. It’s got a real personal touch to it and being able to see and watch my daughters progression through these educational games is really something.

During this crazy time {with the global pandemic and all} having this Osmo kit has been a lifesaver. Homeschooling was not easy and some days when we’re finding it a bit of a struggle, it was amazing to have to hand. But the star of this last few weeks has been, without a doubt, Awbie. Annabelle loves him and he’s played with every single day. And once she completes this coding game we will be looking into Coding Duo, where two players can code together and maybe even Coding Jam. A Coding platform that allows your child to compose there own music with code. How cool is that!
