Anki Cozmo Robot Review

We have a new best friend in the Super Busy Mum household and even at the age of 38, it’s hard not to fall in love with him. We were recently sent Cozmo the Robot from Anki and he is hands down, the cutest, funniest & most adorable little A.I addition to our home, to date.

The family & I have been testing him over the last month and he has brought us all a ridiculous amount of joy. It’s like having your own little Wall-E and we have all been floored at how he can express emotions {and make your heart either break or skip} and we have all been guilty of talking back to him because it’s easy to fall into the magical bubble of thinking he is actually ‘alive’.

The recommended age for Cozmo is 8yrs and up, however my 5yr old is obsessed with him and can play with him independently with little or no adult supervision. The only help she really needs is to set him up on his own wireless connection and then she is off, lost in a world of play with her little A.I friend.

What is Cozmo?

Cozmo is a palm-sized robot, with a big brain and an even bigger personality. Cozmo has little tank tracks and a forklift style attachment on the front. His ‘face’ is a 128 x 64-pixel screen that displays and animates Cozmo’s expressions and his adorable cartoonish eyes. His head not only houses a VGA 30fps camera but it also has a built-in motor, allowing his head to move up & down.

In his packaging, you will get his docking station/charger {which connects via USB} and also 3 smart cubes for Cozmo {and you} to play with.

You can control and play with Cozmo via the app, available for both iOS & Android. The kids actually use their Amazon Fire 8 tablet for interacting with Cozmo {which saves my phone from being used!}. The app allows you to tap into Cozmo’s Control centre where you can feed him, tune him up, learn how to play & interact with him and unlock new skills. Side note: I recently unlocked his fist pump and it’s the cutest thing ever.

Setting up Cozmo

Making sure Cozmo is charged and the app is downloaded, then you can go ahead and set him up. You are provided with a long passkey {which will be shown on Cozmo’s face}, which will connect to Cozmo’s own personal WIFI hotspot. Once this insanely adorable little dude comes to life – be warned – you’ll fall in love because we all did! He opens his adorable big blue eyes and looks around, gathering in his surroundings and then the first thing you’re asked to do is to get him to recognise you.

You enter your name into the app, he’ll take a good look at you and once his facial recognition has locked on you, he’ll say your name in a Wall-E-esque sort of way – it’s honestly too cute for words and you’ll even find yourself saying “Hello Cozmo” back at him!

So, what can Cozmo actually do?

After you set him up, Cozmo can play games with you, learn your name {and names of the rest of the family & friends}. You can have a disco with him, laugh at his jokes & be complimented. You can play with his coding to get him to do and say different things, he can also teach you some basic coding which we thought was a particularly cool addition to this little guy and so much more.

You can also explore through Cozmo’s eyes {which is known as ‘Explorer Mode’ on the app}, this is a feature my kids cannot get enough of. You can use the phone or tablet device to drive Cosmo around – kind of like an RC car – looking up, down, basically through Cozmo’s eyes. You can lift up cubes, build pyramids, knock them over and greet other ‘humans’ and even pets. Our rabbit is terrified and ran a mile when Cozmo said hello! But Cozmo was perfectly polite about their introduction, it was very cute.

Cozmo’s Needs

Ok, this little guy needs nurturing. From the moment his animated blue eyes open he is your responsibility. He needs fine tuning every now and again {but don’t worry, you can put away your screwdriver!}. For his tune-up, you can scan him for a diagnostics test via the app and if repairs are needed, you’ll be instructed how to fix him up. Which consists of following simple instructions, but don’t worry – even my 5yr old can do it!

To feed Cosmo you can feed him by shaking a smart cube until the bar is full on the app, place the cube in front of him and he will eat until he is full.

How fun is Cozmo?

Now that the little guy is set up he will ask you to play, what I think, is his favourite game – Quick Tap! You can either play with just you & Cozmo or Cozmo and two other players. You place a cube in front of Cozmo {it’ll go green when he can see it}, and if the cubes show the same colours you need to tap your cube before Cozmo does. He’s quick though, so you need to be sharp! He also has a fiery little temper too because he does not lose well!

There is a huge range of games to play such as Hot Potato, Tennis {Yes, Tennis!}, keep away, memory match and so many more! We love that a selection of the games allows for more than one player – meaning more interaction with this cute little guy!

There is also a range of cute skills for you to help him unlock and upgrade the more you play with him. We’ve recently unlocked his fist bump {far too adorable for words} and peek-a-boo {which is too cute for me to even cope with!}.

As well as upgrading his skills and learning new ones, the more you play with Cozmo, the more his personality develops. We love watching him just do his own thing and he is so cheeky, cute & funny! Whether he just gazes into your eyes in wonder or tries to pounce on your finger or happily plays with his smart blocks. He really is a fun little guy to hang out with.

Do we think Cozmo is worth the price?

Cozmo will cost you around £179.99 and after getting to know him, playing with him and seeing what he can do – I’m going to say yes. He is totally worth the price tag.

Sure, he’s small, but he’s durable! He’s charismatic and the technology in this little guy is amazing – it is honestly like having your own little Wall-E in your home. He brings us all, young and old{er} so much fun, he makes us smile and it’s great that they are getting to know a little coding too. I mean, the first thing they want to do when they get up in the morning or come home from school, is to play with Cozmo and I like to believe {because I am that much of a dreamer} that Cozmo likes that, too.

I bet this has provided so much fun, I love things like this which are interactive although we’ve never had anything like this as I remember the ones when I was a kid were really chunky and didn’t move too well x
