AD | Preparing for a New School Year with MyTutor {Review}

Over the summer holidays, I am one of those Mums who like to prepare her children for the new school year. As there will be new topics to learn and new educational challenges to prepare for. I personally like to help my kids feel less overwhelmed in those first few weeks of a new school term. Especially with a subject that they may have struggled with in the previous year. For my youngest daughter, Maths has always been a strong subject. However, she has flaws too because she can lack attention, not double-check her work and due to laziness, can get answers wrong that she knows she should have gotten correct. Annabelle started P6, this new school term, which means, the preparations for High School in 2yrs have begun. So, she needs to kick the habit of going too fast, not double-checking work etc. That was my main aim over the last lot of weeks and MyTutor has helped with that. Investing in a tutor is a valuable addition to your child’s education.

Finding the Right Tutor is important

MyTutor is an online tutoring service, with hundreds of tutors with degrees in a range of subjects. They also tutor children from as young as 5, right up to the University level. So the age range and educational topic range are vast, which is what first drew me to MyTutor originally.

An extra bonus point for me was being able to find a tutor who, even though they were not apt with the Northern Ireland curriculum, was open to adapting to it to help Annabelle prepare for her new school year. And with MyTutor, you don’t have to go with the first tutor that meets your criteria.

You are able to chat with them via the MyTutor online messaging service, get to know them a little more, hear their plans for your child etc. And if you like them, you can hire their services. If not, then you can move on to the next tutor until you find the right one for your child.

What Subjects are covered and is it affordable?

For Annabelle, Maths was a subject we wanted to focus on for her going into Primary 6. However, there is a vast range of other school subjects covered, such as:

  • Maths
  • English
  • Science
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Spanish
  • French
  • German
  • History
  • Psychology
  • Music
  • Politics
  • and more. Which you can find here.

The cost of a tutoring lesson can be bought for as little as £20 per lesson. And given we are in a cost-of-living crisis, I still think that is a great price! There is no obligation to have them 2-3 times a week. The timetable depends on you & your child and that is another great thing about MyTutor. That you can create your own study plan, alongside the tutor you have chosen. You are in control of the days and times that suit you all, and once everything is agreed on both sides, you are good to go. The sky is the limit as they say!

How do the Tutoring lessons work?

When your lessons are all planned out and scheduled. You will receive a confirmation email of the lessons, including the dates & times that you and your chosen tutor have arranged. On the day of your lesson, you receive an email notification that your lesson is due to begin within the next ten minutes. You log onto your MyTutor account, which will have been made for you when you signed up to use the service. And there will be a link for you to click to enter your lesson. The tutor may or may not be already there, but once they are they will appear on the webcam.

The online lessons are achieved through a webcam and a microphone, so totally online, so you do need to make sure that you have those two working aspects on her PC or laptop before arranging any lessons. There is also a testing section where you can make sure your webcam and microphone are both working, thus removing any hiccups once your lesson begins.

Overall Experience with my daughter

Annabelle really enjoyed her tutoring lessons. It is vitally important that you choose the right tutor for your child’s needs. And if you feel they do not fit, it’s OK to keep looking. This is your child’s education after all. So if something doesn’t feel right, keep looking until you find the right one for your child. I did and I was so pleased with the tutor Annabelle had.

From our personal experience, we highly recommend this service. This is our second time using MyTutor and the first time was my two middle children having Biology & Maths tutoring to help them prepare for exams. Our children’s education is vital and I for one, am a huge fan of getting them tutoring. And best of all? It doesn’t break the bank!

Have you ever hired a tutor or considered doing it?
