Ways to Support Your Child’s Learning with Educational Technology

As parents in the digital age, we are all concerned about how our children are going to absorb content. Screens seem to be taking over the world and there’s a smartphone, an iPad, or a laptop no matter where you go.
It can often feel overwhelming, but it is important to note that technology doesn’t need to be an enemy. If you use it thoughtfully it can often be a powerful tool that supports your child’s education instead of hindering it. Here are some ways you can encourage your child in their learning journey through technology;
The Magic of Interactive Learning Apps
Technology has become more advanced in the past few decades. We have gotten rid of simple, boring flashcard apps and embraced much more complicated ones. Modern apps adapt to your child’s level and create personalized lessons in subjects like maths, reading, coding, and art.
A few examples are Khan Academy Kids, Duolingo, or Prodigy Math. These allow children to learn at their own pace and also make those lessons feel a lot like games.
If you are letting your children explore these new-age apps you are helping them step outside their comfort zone and encouraging problem-solving skills that they might not have been able to access otherwise.
Pro Tip: Explore the app first just so you can make sure it is age appropriate.
Screen Time = Creative Time
Let your child’s creative expression run wild during screen time. Don’t just limit them to memorizing facts. Allow them to use storytelling apps to write or drawing apps to illustrate. Help them experiment with music apps where they can discover beats and melodies (let them count the beats) and allow them to link it to their classroom concepts.
Creative uses of technology allow your child to go from being passive consumers to becoming creators and learning digital skills. If you feel your child is wasting their time on unproductive apps, give them an alternative. Make sure it is one they will really enjoy.
Technology and Hands-On Activities
You don’t need to separate the traditional ways of learning from new-age ones. Why not combine the two?
Create a healthy mix of digital tools and real-world activities. Allow your child to use a science app to learn about different kinds of ecosystems and then let them head outdoors to explore a park and identify flora and fauna.
You could even help your child design a digital poster and then use high-tech poster printing machines to bring their creation to life. Pairing digital exploration with physical activities is a great way to help them build a healthy relationship with technology.
Become Good Role Models
Children learn more from what we do as parents than what we say to them. If you want them to use technology for more productive work rather than scrolling or watching videos, start modeling it yourself. Share interesting articles, watch documentaries together, or explore a new app.
Do not shy away from technology. Embrace it in a way that it educates you and your child together. Become more involved in how they use tech and mold it so that it becomes a tool for their learning.
Similarly, if you want your children to listen to you and spend more time with you, it is important to model that behavior too. Put those smartphones away especially when your child talks to you and demands your attention so they can learn the same.
Setting Healthy Boundaries
Even the most educational apps and programs can quickly become unhelpful if they are overused. It is important for parents to set strict boundaries around screen time.
A great way to do this is to use parental controls as well as scheduling tech-free hours. Make sure your child has enough time away from the screen to connect with family and enjoy nature. Our goal should never be to eliminate technology from their lives but instead to allow the screens to complement your child’s development.
Final Thoughts
Don’t treat educational technology as just another trend. EdTech is going to continue to change how children learn and grow. Instead of moving further away from it, start embracing it and slowly introducing healthy ways for your kids to enjoy screen time.
When done intentionally, tech integration in the classrooms can be quite empowering. It sparks curiosity and a lifelong love of learning!
