The reality of being a pet parent

With Mother’s Day fast approaching, we’re taking a look at what it’s like to be a pet parent. Dogs, cats, hamsters, bunny rabbits, you name it, each and every type of pet takes up a lot of our time, responsibility and of course our love and affection. It really can be like raising another child, pets quickly become true members of the family.
And although we love them, any pet owner will admit that it can sometimes be hard work. Will a pet suit your lifestyle? Will the whole family help you out? And most of all, is it the right thing to do?
Here are a few things to consider before bringing a pet into your family home, the good, the bad and everything in between!
Extra responsibility
Your children might have been begging you for years, and you’ve finally caved and decided that now’s the time to get a pet. But what about all the chores that come with it? For example, a dog will need feeding, watering, walking, grooming, lots of company and not to mention all that dog hair that’ll need hoovering up. Our furry friends take up a lot of our time.

Make sure that you get the whole family involved and give everyone their fair share of the work (especially if they were the ones begging you for a pet!). If you’ve got young children, it’ll also be your responsibility to teach your children how to act around pets. Although a fluffy little kitten might look like something to squeeze, cuddle and poke like a teddy, they won’t take too fondly to it. Teach the youngsters how to respect boundaries and that prodding and pulling at their pet is never allowed!
So many things to buy…
People left, right and centre will be giving you advice about what to buy and what not to buy, it can often end up feeling like a bit of a minefield knowing what you need. You need your house to be pet-proofed and pet-prepared, which is a little bit of a tongue twister! Some of the most important things to think about (especially for a dog) are beds, toys, a collar and lead, grooming utensils and of course, food.
We all know that dogs love food, and it’s essential that they get the right dinners to keep them happy and healthy. High-quality dog food like Pure Pet Food, which is filled with nutritious, natural ingredients is exactly what you need to make sure your pooch thrives. It’s also delivered right to your door so you don’t have to worry about popping into the shops. Now that’s one less chore on the list!
Training can take A LOT of time
Training is hard work. If you’re thinking of getting a puppy, prepare for months of mischief, chewed up coffee tables and a big bundle of crazy puppy energy. Oh, and of course, toilet training…

But just remember, it’s all in good fun. You can’t expect a perfectly-behaved puppy from day one, so make sure to get loads of treats, loads of patience and of course get the whole family involved, it doesn’t have to be hard work, make it fun!
You might get a little pet-crazy
When you get a pet, it’s inevitable that they’ll start to take over your life, in a good way! Get ready for a frenzy of pet products, pet accessories and you might even start cancelling your plans to stay home with your new companion.
There’ll be hundreds of photos of your furry friend on your phone, you’ll be telling everyone you meet about them, and you’ll probably even start talking to your pet as if they were a human. Yep, we’ve all been there. After all, they’re your four-legged, furry child, so why wouldn’t you talk to them like that? It might all sound a bit crazy now, but it’s true!
They make you feel good!
Despite all the hard work, it’s probably a given that the benefits of owning a pet outweigh the negatives, because if they didn’t, why would people have them in the first place?

Dogs, cats, hamsters, bunnies and all the rest are all just positively adorable. They make you feel happy just looking at them. They provide companionship, fun and taking care of them is rewarding for both adults and children alike. Pets are known to improve our mental health and if you have a canine companion, they can also improve your physical health by getting you up and out for walkies. All in all, it’s totally worth it.
Should I get a pet?
Yes, yes and yes! If being a pet parent is right for you, your family and your lifestyle, a pet could be the perfect addition to the family. Although it can be difficult, time-consuming and downright messy. Becoming a pet mum is extremely rewarding, and you’ll never be short of company and a few slobbery kisses!
