Our Visit to the National History Museum in Vienna, Austria

Our Visit to the National History Museum in Vienna, Austria

If you are a regular reader, or follower on my Instagram, then you will know my daughter and I love a museum. We recently visited the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Holland when staying with Eurocamp in Duinrell Holiday Park. And it was spectacular. We have no doubt about why that place is ranked Number 1 in the world. Because it is quite clear to see why. So, naturally, when planning our visit to Vienna, museums needed to be added to the list.  And in particular, the Museum of National History.

Get in the National History Museum with the Vienna Pass

I bought us Vienna passes before our visit and gaining us access to over 90 attractions, it was an easy decision to make. Now, we knew visiting 90 attractions during our 3 days visit to Vienna was not possible. But buying the Vienna Pass, we have noticed, has still been a big money saver. As you can most likely tell, you can get into the Natural History Museum, Vienna with the Vienna Pass.

You just download your mobile passes via the email you received and show them at the entrance. They are scanned and off you do. Super simple! If you do not have a Vienna Pass, then the normal fee to get in is 14 euro , 10 reduced {which I assume is for pensioners and students} and children under 10yrs go free.

Inside is the most beautiful architecture that I think I have ever seen. Dating back to the day it was officially opened as a museum, way back in 1889, it is easy to see why the interior is so superbly crafted. I think it is a real shame that places are not built the same way that they used to be. With cherubs, absolutely mind-blowingly huge paintings, statues, gargoyles and over the top features and marbled craftsmanship.

It is stated that 4 billion years of history is held within the walls of the Naturhistorisches Museum in Vienna. Including minerals, dinosaur bones, fossils and including the 26,500 year old {and only 11 cm tall} statue, Venus of Willendorf.

Behind this amazing museum are numerous scientists and researchers who carry out research of life, earth & human science. Gathering specimens and information, sharing it across 39 exhibition rooms, over 8460 square meters of space containing around 30 million specimens.

Meteorites to Mammals!

In one of the world’s beautiful buildings you can find just that, everything from meteorites to mammals. Which seems like such a spectrum of artifacts, but such as the mission of National History Museums! I commend them for bringing together an incredibly fascinating collection {of millions of specimens} to fascinate and dazzle us all.

This museum, if you decide to visit, needs 2-3hrs of your time. Easily! The place is absolutely massive and that is even when comparing it to the Naturalis Diversity Museum in Holland!

The building which is home to the Natural History Museum is nothing short of stunning. The floors, the walls, the pillars, the marble and stone carvings are absolutely beautiful. It is a very impressive building to say the least.

There are so many interesting sections to this natural history museum, covering so many parts of history. From animals, to humans, neanderthals, evolution, minerals, every mammal, bird, amphibian that you could think of is taxidermied and featured within the museum.

Even Dinosaurs…

Yes, you heard me, even Dinosaurs! This blew my mind as I went from never having seen a Triceratops skull, to seeing two inside two months!

The National History Museum in Vienna is absolutely unreal and with some parts of it still under construction! The sheer amount of taxidermied animals they have under one gigantic room was nothing short of amazing. And at times, quite overwhelming!

I actually could not recommend this as an attraction to visit if you are ever visiting Vienna. It is such a breathtakingly stunning museum and it’s place to eat? Absolutely unreal, which I will leave as a surprise for you if you ever get the chance to swing by.

I am going to level with you, I could honestly share every single photo that I took during our visit. But that could spoil the visual joy as a first timer for you! So, I have denied myself the go ahead to upload any more.

But whoever is reading this post, I hope you’ve enjoyed the photos. It really is one of the most beautiful buildings I have ever been in. And, if you ever visit, please stop by this post and let me know what you thought during you’re time there.
