Naming your photos & why you should!

naming your photos and why you shouldOver the last few days, I’ve been thrown into a realm of SEO ready-posts, meta-tags and other blog-related jargon. Basically what I’m only learning now? I wish I knew when I started my blog two years ago, as now I have 24+ months worth of updating to do and other such tweaks to make my blog shine a little brighter. I had no idea, in fact I don’t even think the thought crossed my mind how important it would be to be naming your photos.

My first hurdle {and it’s a big one} is realising that I haven’t been naming all of my blog photos. Why have I not done this? #facepalm Honestly, thinking about the thousands {literally!} of photos I have on my blog and I actually want to weep at the thought of having to go through them all to rename them to give that particular blog post better SEO capabilities.

So, for all the newbie bloggers reading this! Don’t make the same mistake I did and leave your image name as DS2347 etc. PLEASE RENAME THEM!

If you’ve pulled a rookie move like me then don’t fret! Going through a dozen posts a night will soon see you straight and all will be right in the world of SEO once more.

For WordPress you can just go into the ‘edit’ section of your post, click the image, select the little edit pencil and rename the photo accordingly in the ‘Image Alternative name’ section, save and the jobs done.
You can even adjust the names of your photos as you’re uploading to your blog. Why I never noticed this I’ll never know! I think it goes to show how embarrassingly unobservant I can be.

For Blogger…you just select the image and go into image properties and just rename your image in the ‘Alt text’ section. It’s all pretty simple really. So with those wish words shared, you’ll have to excuse me, I have a good 1000 or so photos that need renaming…

Have you ever made a Blogger boo-boo? Is it as huge as mine? Come on, spill them to me in the comments below! 😉

Ya ha, I’ve made some blogger boo boos in my time. In fact I’ve made this very same mistake. I do try and remember to name all my photos but I confess, it doesn’t always happen. As for other mistakes I’ve made…too many to mention!

I did exactly the same and am in the process of cleaning up the same mess! Nearly there, but it’s taken me months … Wish I’d read this when I’d started!

I was the exact same! I had always heard of Alt tags on blogger but just didn’t bother. How stupid was I! I’ve started doing it to all (or most) of my posts this year however starting to go back and amend older ones which i think are relevant. I just wish I had known about this at the beginning so I wouldn’t have over 1500 posts to go through and edit haha! xx

I’ve recently started to do this, it was something I forgot to do often! I love this post; real blogging advice, not just ‘network’, ‘use Twitter ‘ and all that jazz! Fab post x

I have only started doing this since I moved to wordpress – guess I should probably go back and name all the ones from when I was on blogger? Arghhhh lol!

I’ve started making sure I do this and I’m going back through old posts to edit them now too.

  7. 16/10/2015 / 11:45 AM

Ohh no, I never name my photos. Not sure I have the time or energy to go back and re-do them but I’ll make sure I do it from now on.

Thanks for sharing your tips! 🙂

Ah we all make blog boo boo’s that’s all part of the fun right? I do rename my feature image but not the ones in the body – which I know is stupid! There are SO many elements to a blog post – I need a check list! Maybe I will write one and sick on my blog to remind me! Great post and thank you for sharing your wise wisdom’s! Xx

I haven’t done that yet at all, oops! Luckily I’m pretty new so my blog is very much in its fledgling stage so not too many to go through! Thank you! Jodie xx

I never named my photos until my husband read an article telling you the benefits of this and I have started going through them. I am not at the end yet but am on my way!

I’m quite new at blogging so SEO is a mystery to me! I never rename my photos so I have to do it asap! I need to boost my blog because it’s somehow stuck and I can’t figure out how to make it more visible to the public…

I have named some of my photos but not all of them. I didn’t realize it would improve my SEO. Thanks for letting all of us know this!

I’ve done some of mine but not all. Should we name the photo as a description of what it is? Or the same as the blog post title? Thanks.
