Making Paris Work for Families: Our Go-To Spots for Downtime Between Adventures
Between a guided tour of the Eiffel Tower, cruising on the Seine and exploring the catacombs of Paris, visiting the French capital can get exhausting. When you have children in tow, you must find ways to slow down.
As charming as Paris is, touring it as a family can take its toll. I always recommend squeezing in breaks between adventures to help recharge. Luckily, the city is generous with relaxation options, from bistros to manicured gardens. Below are some spots we prefer as a family when looking to unwind, refuel, and simply enjoy being together in the City of Light.
Luxembourg Gardens
The onboard experience of the London to Paris train is a relaxing way to start your travel, but it helps to have a few low-energy activities on your itinerary. I advise visiting Jardin du Luxembourg. This sprawling garden in the 6th arrondissement is one of the cityโs most family-friendly oases. Children can sail miniature boats across the Grand Basin, climb and slide at one of the best playgrounds in the French capital or catch a puppet show at the Thรฉรขtre des Marionnettes. Meanwhile, parents can sit beneath the tree-lined paths, sipping coffee from the garden cafรฉ and soaking up the atmosphere. I find the garden’s mixture of activity and calm ideal for midday breaks. After a morning at the nearby Notre Dame or Musรฉe dโOrsay, a few hours here help reset everyone’s energy.
Place des Vosges
In the 3rd and 4th arrondissements, in Le Marais, is the capital’s oldest planned square. It’s a serene refuge with unique architecture and beautiful gardens. You can pop into the bistro for refreshments while the kids walk around. If the weather permits it, you can have a family picnic as you watch passers-by. As you wind down the day, head to the Victor Hugo Museum, which offers free entry. Alternatively, you could look at the shops in the square for souvenirs.
Savour Cafรฉ Culture
Although they might not look like it, cafรฉs in Paris can be family-friendly. The city is famous for cafรฉ culture, and your family can indulge in it while enjoying some time off a busy schedule. Various establishments in the City of Light are kid-friendly. I prefer the terraced ones, where we can all sit and feast on the surroundings quietly. Local cafรฉs are ideal if you want to linger for a while. You can find a few places near the Eiffel Tower or around Le Marais, where you can watch the city’s bustle as the family catches up on the day’s adventures.
Canal Saint-Martin
When you need a change from formal parks, Canal Saint-Martin offers a laid-back atmosphere that is perfect for older kids and teens. The shaded walkways and iron footbridges along the canal provide a charming route for family strolls or bike rides. Stop by local bakeries for picnic supplies and set up along the water’s edge to watch boats navigate the locks. It might sound simple, but it’s an oddly captivating experience. On sunny afternoons, the area feels like a local secret where Parisians unwind, making it a great way for families to experience everyday life in the city.
