Lenovo Smart Display | Review

We are a pretty busy family – with school trips, dental appointments, days out and so much more to remember – half the time I’m saying to my Husband that I need a clone!

So when I was kindly sent out the Lenovo Smart Display to review, I was thrilled! I can often be like a human version of Dory, forever forgetting all kinds of important stuff, so I knew this would come in very handy for us.

This is the first of the Google Smart Displays with Google Assistant and on our first glance, we were all pretty impressed. We were kindly sent out the 10″ version of this Smart Display {there is also an 8″ version available} and the screen quality alone is exquisite. It is so bright that its visuals are so sharp and crisp – it’s hard not to be impressed.

Smart homes are becoming the latest ‘in thing’ to have and I guess having a smart home display in your home is the next step up. We already have a smart lightbulb {which is really quite fun} and an Alexa. But having a smart display with a screen is a bit of a game changer and it is also insanely easy to set up – which includes downloading the Google Home app {available on Android & iOS devices} and following the simple steps.

There are two aspects of this smart display that I have never known any other device to have and that is – the ability to flick a switch to block off the camera – with the privacy shutter – as well as the ability to mute the microphone.

People have always said to me “Aren’t you worried if ‘someone’ is listening in on you” and I guess I’m not really. But that’s not to say that doesn’t ever happen – which is a tad unnerving! But, this smart display can put your mind at ease because you can close the camera with the privacy shutter and easily mute the microphone.

You can have the display is either landscape mode or Portrait – depending on the space you have available. However, the portrait mode can only really be used during video calls by using the app, Google Duo – which is a bit of a shame. We have quite a small kitchen, with limited counter space, so having it function in portrait mode would have been very handy. However, it is what it is.

Another aspect that can be considered a bit of a shame, is having to get my friends and family to download the Google Duo app in order to use the video calling function on the smart display. In hindsight, it’s not the biggest issue in the world because after all, it’s just downloading an app and adding people as your ‘friend’ on the app. It takes moments to do so it’s really not that big of a deal.

We use the video calling app quite a lot and mostly in the home, just for the sheer amusement of it. Annabelle, in particular, loves to video call her brother, who is literally sat up in his bedroom. It’s quite cute and he is always happy to hear from her. I am sure we will video call more family over the next week, especially on Christmas day! The sound quality is incredible and the visuals due to the high-resolution screen & 5MP wide-angle camera are amazing too.

So, what do we use our Smart display for?

  • Well, I’ve set up the ‘Good morning’ feature on it which is lovely to get a run-down of everything from the weather and news as I am making the kids packed lunches for the day. I love that I can listen to music as I am cleaning the house – the sound system on this device is actually incredible!
  • My girls love to bake and even during those times when I am too busy to help – I love that the Lenovo Smart Display can give them step-by-step instructions to follow. Allowing them to bake, with me supervising and in turn, they gain a little independence in the kitchen too!

  • I love the step-by-step recipe function too because this year I plan to make the best roast potatoes made ever and Lenovo is going to help me!
  • It helps me remember daily ‘things to do’ and any appointments and things that I may have for that day. This is an amazing feature and something that I now could not live without.
  • We listen to music on it, especially for those kitchen discos! When you’re in a family who likes to groove, kitchen discos are a thing! The speaker quality on the Lenovo Smart display is insane. All thanks to it’s 10W full range speaker & 2 passive tweeters {which is a function designed to disperse sound equally and accurately}

A few other things the Lenovo Smart Display does is it can control a Nest device if you have one! As well as control any Philips HUE devices you have too. We have neither of those, so I cannot comment on how they work but knowing how well this smart display works with everything we use it with, already – I am sure they function really well.

Overall, we love this Smart display – it is helpful, informative, fun to use for all kinds of things, whether you are googling funny cat videos to keep the kids content as you make dinner – and so much more!

As a side note, you might be wondering what the difference is between the 8″ & 10″ smart displays and other than the screen size, everything else is mostly the same! The main difference is on the 8″ display you will have a grey/plastic style rear panel and on the 10″ you have a really lovely bamboo style rear panel.
