AD | Staying overnight at Greenhill YMCA in Newcastle

When you’re thinking of places to have an overnight stay or a few days staycation with the family. You think of B&B’s, Hotels and Air BnB’s, right? However, have you ever considered staying at a residential centre? Now, I’ll be the first to admit that staying at an outdoor residential centre wouldn’t be my first choice. In fact, I never knew staying at a residential centre was even an option, as a family! But it turns out it is and I am here to tell you all about it. We were very kindly invited to enjoy an overnight stay at Greenhill YMCA outdoor learning and residential centre in Newcastle a few weeks ago and it was really good fun.

We were offered to stay in one of their Cedar Cabins, which was lovely. We’ve never stayed in a cabin before and Annabelle especially was super excited. Oh, to be a seven-year-old, eh!

Getting to Greenhill YMCA

Getting to Greenhill by foot, wasn’t easy. But it wasn’t difficult either! It just wasn’t very straight forward, due to the lack of signs etc. We got the bus from Belfast into Newcastle. So from Newcastle bus station to Greenhill YMCA, it took around 30 minutes. Bearing in mind I have short legs and I had 3 children with me, too.

To get there, you need to walk through the archway of Donard Car Park and walk straight by McHughs Bar & Restaurant to the other side of the road. From there, turn right and walk straight along to a gate {with playing fields on your right} and walk passed the grey gate into the field beyond it.

From there, walk straight until you reach a right turn on the pathway and walk towards the yellow gate. Once you have passed the yellow gate, turn left and walk up the forest lane. This is quite hilly, so just bear that in mind if you are coming on foot as we did.

After a short walk up the lane, you’ll come across a right turn, with a sign on a tree saying Green hill YMCA. You’ll hear a waterfall on your left. Follow that lane towards the residential centre and you’ll come across the reception on the left at the end of the lane.

Our Cedar Cabin Accommodation

In Greenhill, there are 5 Cedar Cabins available for self-catering or full board accommodation. We had the self-catering option, which suits us to the ground. Each cabin can fit up to 12 people, due to its 3 bedrooms each having two sets of bunk beds in each room. If extra beds are needed, there are two fold-down beds in the living room.

The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need from a kettle, toaster, cooker, fridge, microwave, dishwasher and so on. There is also a lovely table to enjoy your meals at or board games! And of course, the spacious living has 2 sofas, a TV and a DVD player.

Shower accommodation at Greenhill

Within each Cedar Cabin, there are two toilets, one of which also has a shower. If there is a group of you staying there is a shower block that you can use that is just behind the reception building. Lastly, each cabin comes with a balcony. The view is mainly trees, but it’s still beautiful.

If you walk just outside our cabin, you can see Dundrum bay, which is a gorgeous view! Overall, you are surrounded by nature which after the year we’ve all had? Is just what the doctor ordered!

We had a really lovely stay. You have everything you need to make your stay a good one, from a TV, lounge area to hang out together in, really comfortable beds to get a good night sleep in and more. The kids and I, in all honesty, were sad to be going and they’ve been asking {repeatedly} when we can go back. So, I guess we will be back at some point, which is exciting. Especially since they have an array of fun activities to look into booking as well!

The Cedar Cabins cost £110 per night, they can sleep up to 12 people, minimum stay 2-night stay and pets are welcome in one of the cabins on the residential park. So do inquire about its availability before making your booking.

Also, just down the road from the Cedar cabins is the base of Donard Forest, a gorgeous piece of forestry with a waterfall leading up one of the smallest mourne mountains.

  • This is pretty cool. It looks like a great stay with amazing views. I’m glad it worked for you and your family. 🙂

  • The place looks so relaxing because it’s so clean and beautiful! It looks fun going there.

  • Oh, to be able to travel here and see this all for myself! I can’t wait until COVID is over and I can start travelling the world again.

  • Nnniiiccceeeee….I would love to stay here. The shower is just the kind that I love. Small but not giving room for water to flow away towards the sink or toilet, either!

  • This looks much better than any YMCA I know of in America! I may have to see if there’s more here that I don’t know about. And that countryside is absolutely gorgeous.

  • Looks like it was a surprisingly fun time! I don’t think the YMCA has this type of outdoor recreational facility in the United States, if they do I’ve never heard of them. I’m going to look into that now because I’m intrigued!

  • Ireland has been on my bucketlist for a long time. Even more reason to go for a visit! That place looks so fun! My only experience with a YMCA was a gym, haha.

  • That looks like a great place to kick back and relax. I love the area, and the cabin looked very comfortable.
