5 best things to do in New Zealand as a family

New Zealand is full of activities that are perfect for the little ones. There are many opportunities for adventure, education, and relaxation. Is there a better way to spend a vacation as a family?

All of you can learn about the Maori culture, watch dolphins swim in the distance and so much more! But before that, you’ll need to find a comfortable flight to New Zealand from UK

When the clouds finally scatter and New Zealand’s breathtaking vistas start to stretch out below, you can almost hear the collective intake of breath in the cabin. This place is so magical. Let me show you some of our favourite activities that we did when we were there.

1. Explore Middle-Earth at the Hobbiton movie set

For families who are fans of films like The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, a visit to the Hobbiton Movie Set is a must-do as this is a highlight of many New Zealand family holidays.

Here, you can meander through the charming, well-kept hobbit holes, grab a refreshing drink at the Green Dragon Inn, and feel the old-world charm at the Mill.

We explored this set with a guide which shared fascinating insights into how the movies were made. After the guided tour, you must take at least a few selfies in its picturesque setting.

2. Discover Maori culture in Rotorua

Rotorua is a hub of Maori culture, and no visit to New Zealand is complete without understanding this aspect of the country’s heritage.

Families can visit Te Puia, where they can see the Pohutu Geyser, enjoy Maori performances, and learn about traditional arts and crafts.

It’s also recommended to go to Mitai Maori Village which offers an authentic introduction to Maori customs. It also includes a traditional Hangi meal cooked on the earth and a night-time canoe experience. You can learn so much about its history and traditions here.

3. Adventure in Queenstown

Queenstown is the capital of New Zealand and has something for every age and thrill level. You can go on a scenic gondola ride up Bob’s Peak for panoramic views and then zip down on the luge tracks.

There are also bungee jumps and skydives, but this is not for everyone. And that’s okay because you can also go for something less risky, like a jet boat ride on the Shotover River. The town also serves as a gateway to the stunning Fiordland National Park, where families can take a cruise through Milford Sound, often described as the eighth wonder of the world.

4. Go wildlife spotting on the Otago peninsula

The Otago Peninsula, close to Dunedin in the South Island, is a haven for wildlife and offers unique opportunities for families to see rare species in their natural habitats.

In the Royal Albatross Centre, you can observe majestic birds, while in the Penguin Place reserve, you can take a tour to see the world’s smallest penguin, the cute Little Blue Penguin. Here you can also see seal and sea lion colonies with the occasional sighting of whales and dolphins which will make up for an exciting day out.

5. Relax and play at the Coromandel peninsula

The Coromandel Peninsula has many beautiful beaches, natural hot springs, and a laid-back atmosphere, making it a perfect spot for family relaxation. The most popular spot in the Coromandel peninsula is the Hot Water beach where you can dig your hot pool in the sand at low tide. This is a unique experience that delights all ages.
