Jacobs 9th Birthday surprise!

Last week my little copper headed boy turned nine. Nine! I don’t know where the last nine years have gone but I do know that he has grown into one of the most endearing, thoughtful, heartbreakingly considerate and loving little boys. He does try to be all tough sometimes and has a go at the huffy pre-tween saga on occasion but he fails miserably because he’s just so damn lovely. Don’t get me wrong though, he can be a little 4ft tall pain in the backside, but he’s still lovely.

Usually, Jacob’s birthday party doesn’t go ahead until after he goes back to school – because I’m a bit of a silly sausage and never get all of the Mummy’s numbers to organize a summer break birthday party {my bad!}. However this year, I decided to throw him a surprise birthday party {I know, call me crazy!}I had never planned a surprise birthday party in my life and after this experience – I doubt I’ll do it again. I’m all for trying something at least once, but my goodness, it was a job and a half putting everything together. And making sure all of the pieces fell perfectly into place.

The first job was to pick his brains to find out who his closest little buddies are from school and track down their parents. Typing that out made it all sound quite intense and finding them did resemble some sort of covert mission! But with the help of some friends of mine, who knew those in question etc was such a big help – and in no time at all I had all of his little chums invited. Job one successful.

I decided, after visiting Minevention recently to hire our the Godmodex Video Gaming Bus for Jacobs surprise birthday party – and after being on it during the Minecraft event I could not wait to surprise him with it on his birthday. However, after I hired the video gaming bus my brain clicked that we live in a small cul-de-sac and this was an actual bus – where was it going to go?? Pah! I’d figure that out later! Either way…Job two successful.

Task three? Baking! I was able to tie this in with ‘Summer activities’ to keep the 4yo entertained. I did almost give things away when I made over 40 rice krispie buns and he called me up on it! “Mum, you’ve made 46 buns!” he screeched, to which I replied, “Sure, you know what I’m like when I cook pasta, this turned out the same!”. He accepted that. I win. Buns were made. Boom! Job three successful.

As the days clicked down to ‘the day’ things just got so incredibly difficult to do without calling in some backup; namely the ex-husband & my Dad. Jacob was whisked away for the evening {the night before his surprise party} by his Dad so I could bake his cake & on the morning of his party, my Dad came round for him. He said he needed Jacob for some top secret Granda stuff that he needed help with *wink wink*. Allowing us to decorate, hustle all of his little pals into the house and prepare ourselves for his surprise!

If I’m honest? The surprise could not have gone better! I was so chuffed with it all and just seeing the look on my little boy’s face was amazing. He had no idea bless him – none whatsoever and it honest-to-goodness could not have gone better if we tried. You can see the moment I captured {albeit blurry} over on my Instagram & here are a few photos of the day.

Sadly, as you can see – not many photos were taken! Throwing a birthday party of any kind is busy but it was a huge success and I just loved being able to do that for my little man who has always had to wait a little longer to celebrate his birthday with his friends. He had an amazing day and I need to give a shout out for the GodModex Video Gaming bus because they were fantastic. If you’re in the County Antrim area and looking for something a little different – then I could not recommend this video gaming bus enough.

Now for a little down time before my eldest sons 18th next week…

He really did, so all the ninja behind-the-scenes madness to organise it was so worth it. Time really does fly too! x
