Better Wifi EVERYWHERE with the NETGEAR Orbi Wifi System

We live in a digital world – combine that with a busy home, where someone is always on something technology-based whether it’s on a desktop PC doing their Mathletics, or chatting to their friends in a Whatsapp group, or even having a cheeky session on World of Warcraft. The wifi can at some points during our afternoons and evenings be stretched pretty thin.

When this happens there will always be someone piping up from somewhere in the house that they can’t watch this show or that show because it’s buffering or someone’s game isn’t loading. On top of the very thinly stretched wifi during our afternoons and early evenings, we also have a wifi dead zone in the house, which is sadly my 9yr olds bedroom. Wifi dead zones are a bit mystical to me. I’m not entirely sure why they happen, but Jacob never fails to let me know how much this annoys him.

So, when NETGEAR got in touch to ask if we would like to review their Orbi Whole Home Wifi System – If I’m honest, it’s a product that I wasn’t aware of and it sounded like just the thing we needed to give our home better wifi.

Our current router struggles with the wifi demands in our home, so once our Orbi home system arrived I could not wait to get it set up. The Orbi Home Wifi system is designed specifically to stretch the WiFi coverage – within your home – further than your regular router can manage.

However, before we delve into the specifics! Can we just talk about the design for a second? Both the Orbi Router & Orbi Satellite units are identical – they are both white and very sleek in design. They look much more attractive than our regular router {which pleases me greatly!} and it also means they can be set on a windowsill or a shelf without looking out of place.

On top of the routers, there are ventilation ‘gaps’ which also provides a ring of light – this glows white, magenta or blue and will flash occasionally to inform you the status of each unit. Whether they are connected {blue} or having issues {magenta}

Your Orbi Home Wifi system can also be monitored via the NETGEAR Orbi app – which is available for iOs & Android. You can monitor what devices are connected, how many satellites you have running within your home {you can have more than one}, it lets you know if your internet is online or offline and lots more handy information – all available from the palm of your hand.

So now the question on everyone’s lips…

How does it stretch the wifi further? It achieves this because it’s not just one router, but two! The second unit acts as a Wi-Fi extender and setting it up is so simple that I didn’t even need my Husband’s help.

Both Orbi products that you receive in your home wifi system are fully fledged tri-band routers. Each router has several ethernet & USB ports {very useful!} and each has one 2.4Gz WiFi band & two 5GHz bands.

Setting up your Orbi system isn’t as difficult as you may think – you may remember at the beginning of this post I said that I didn’t even need my Husband’s help! You just follow the instructions provided i.e. plugging them into your existing router with the ethernet provided and positioning your satellite in a central location within your home and turning them on.

The Orbi units will find each other and once a connection has been established the main unit will have a solid white light and the satellite will either flash blue after 3-5 minutes {this means both routers have a strong connection} and if it flashes magenta then you need to move the satellite closer to the main unit.

It’s as simple as that!

On the back of the router, you have a selection of ethernet ports to use with any other wired devices you wish. There is also a USB port {very handy!} and even though it’s only a USB 2.0 that’s not a massive issue {this just means a slower file transfer speed} – so not a huge deal.

Overall – Has it fixed our dead zone issue? I am so pleased to say that it has! My son is elated! I had been promising him that I would buy T-links for ages and I am so pleased I held off because the Orbi Wifi Home system is so much better!

My girls Xbox 360 no longer kicks them off the wireless, this makes them very happy! Because now they can play their Skylanders to their heart’s content!

Everyone can now be online and happy – all at the same time! And being a gaming household – this pleases us all immensely.

Disclosure: We were kindly sent this product for the purpose of my review. All thoughts, photos & opinions are entirely my own.

This would make my brother very, very happy! He’s always on his Xbox and watching YouTube videos. May have to mention it to our dad haha!

I think we need this!!! Constantly watching Netflix to see the little red loading symbol in the middle and then ‘error’ because we’ve lost WiFi signal! X

That’s so good that it’s helped your wifi dead zone. I live in a flat so I don’t really have a problem with wifi but I’m sure when I’m in a house we might have to get something like this x

I don’t know what I would do without my wifi! Our power went down at the weekend for 8 hours and I felt like I’d lost a limb, hehe. This sounds great. We have those mysterious pockets where the wifi doesn’t stretch too. I’m glad this fixed the issue in your son’s bedroom! I also agree the design is so much nicer than other routers.

This is EXACTLY what we have been looking for! We’ve had an absolute nightmare with our wifi with our provider telling us that our house is just too big to get a decent signal in every area. I’m not sure that’s entirely true, we hardly live in a mansion, but its the bane of my life listening to my son moan about our lack of wifi!!!

I could do with one of these for when we go away, we struggle in Windermere with signal

I really need a WiFi extender and I was just going to buy one but perhaps I need to look into something more like this instead as my other half loves fast WiFi that is always working.

A safety tip….don’t put your Obri routers where they can be seen from the outside,it tells people you have wifi and there are people who breach your security and capture your personal info.

I could defiantly use one of these in my house as my internet doesn’t work so well in some parts of my house.

Now that is what I call a sleek router! I always get irritated with ours because the internet will stop working in a middle of a deadline and then I start panicking! x

What a nifty little contraption to solve a very common problem within busy family homes. Its sleek design is also a massive plus!

This is something we desperately need in our house! Our wifi zone is quite small, much to the frustration of my gaming son!
