The Great Outdoors

Over the Easter break, we’ve not taken things easily. We’ve been out and about quite a lot and even been struck down with colds & coughs. So needless to say, Easter has been an eventful one. So, one afternoon after having the laziest of mornings {sometimes they’re just needed, am I right?}, we decided {Ok, I decided!} to gather us up, bundle us outside and to go for a walk into the great outdoors.

Of course, the older children fought against my decision, but my decision was final. We needed a little fresh air and a walk together before dinner was just what we all needed. Whether they thought so, or not.

A regular place that we walk through as a family is our local Monkstown woodland. It’s not much, but it’s a stone throw away from where we live and it can make you feel as though you are miles away from anything. After listening to the kids bicker and moan about having to be outside {you’d think the daylight burned their skin or something} in no time at all they were having the time of their lives.

Watching this little Miss scoot off at a high speed was amazing. She loves that scooter {or, Scooter-bike as she calls it!} and it was great being able to watch her without the fear of roads and traffic.

We ventured down to the creek that has become our destination point when we’re down this way. The kids just love being able to throw stones into the water and to see who can make the biggest splash!

It warms my heart to watch my children get stuck into nature like they do down at this creek. They become kids, not bound by PCs, or technology in any way. But enjoying everything in their surroundings from the leaves that blow in the wind, the cold water flowing by them and they’re left to their imagination to how to make fun with it all.

After an hour or so of throwing stones, skimming rocks and building little dams it was time to go home and can you imagine what the kids said to me? “Aww Mum! Can we stay a little longer?” – so much for them thinking my idea was a bad one, eh!?

These three can try me and test me and some days, they can down right break me. But on afternoons like this one that we had together? Make all of the stresses worth it. I do love by trio of cheeky little monkeys.

Do you have a place that you love to take your children, to be children?
