How to make Salt Dough Baby Keepsakes

I’m a very artsy crafty person, or at least I like to think that I am! I love having a wee go at new things. So naturally I jumped at the chance to give making my own salt dough keepsake a go, to take a lovely DIY foot and/or hand impression of my beautiful 8-week old daughter.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t think it would work, but low & behold it did and I was well impressed!

Here are the ingredients:-

1 cup of salt

1 cup of plain flour
Half a cup of warm water

All you do is add the salt & plain flour together, then gradually add the water until it forms a dough. If the dough is too sticky, add more flour (teaspoon at a time) or if it’s too dry, add more water (a teaspoon at a time) until you get it just right.

Roll the dough out onto some baking paper (between 1 & 2cm thick will do), I rolled mine into a circle and cut it down to fit into my baking tin (it helps to have a hard surface when those little toes/fingers are getting pressed!) then you pop it into your oven at 100 degrees C for 3hrs. If the dough is still soft on the underside, flip it over and bake for a further 2hrs. The lower the heat the better or else the dough will rise!!

I tried this for the first time this morning, and I was surprised at how well it worked! Here are the tootsies of my gorgeous baby girl!

If you’ve just recently had a little one give it a go! I’m even going to get handprints of my 4 & 7yr old kiddies too! They’ll make fab wall decorations! xx

Lovely idea, Deborah! I’m looking to get a plain rectangular canvas, some non-toxic paints & do all 3 of our hands/foot prints and hang it over the sofa!

Aww that’ll be gorgeous Rebecca! I have a similar idea to paint a tree on a large piece of card and have a hand print for each of my children at the tips of the branches and then me & Sean…then put it in a lovely frame!

I’ll get round to it eventually, haha!
