Our favourite Picnic spot with Higgidy! #NationalPicnicWeek

Northern Ireland has many gorgeous places to enjoy a family picnic. Giants Causeway, the peak of Cavehill right here in County Antrim, Mussenden Temple on the North coast in Castlerock and beyond. However, as a big family we don’t drive. I know, I know, crazy right? But at the moment we don’t {however that will be changing soon! All being well} so for now we just stick to places that are quite close to home and it just so happens we have a gorgeous nature walk not far from where we live.
National Picnic Week #1national picnic week 2Monkstown Wood is a really gorgeous place to walk round. You have the river, the stunning Viaducts to gaze upon and loads of forestry nooks and crannies just screaming to be explored.
IMG_20141017_140403This is our local Geo-caching spot and also our place to go in the Autumn for conker season! Nothing more fun than coming here to collect a batch of freshly fallen conkers.
IMG_20141017_140708It’s also really close to Grandas house. In fact, we pass Grandas to walk round this magical little place and I think the kids love that because it means they can pop in, say hello and more often than not, get a biscuit!!
IMG_20141014_161128national picnic week 3The walls are old around these parts. I’d love to know more about them and what they once were etc. I’m curious like that! The wall in the photo above has slots in it, going diagonally up the wall {not visible in this shot due to aiming the opposite way}, but they were clearly steps once-upon-a-time up to the platform of the old railway line on the bridge.
Also, in the image above, if you follow the wall along you’ll come to a dark area before the trees? Just up a little slope is an old stone archway. I would just love to know more about the place!
