Disney’s Art Academy for 3DS, Game Review

My eldest daughter E has been a massive art fan for as long as I can remember. She takes after her Mum in that respect and I could not be more proud. I have many memories sitting in my bedroom, music playing as I happily doodled away on my newest drawing pad. So it’s only natural that I absolutely love finding my eldest girl doing the exact same.

With E’s love of drawing, she was pretty stoked to hear that we were kindly being sent Disney’s Art Academy for the 3DS to review. Disney’s Art Academy is an educational Disney-themed drawing video game from the much-loved Art Academy series. This game was released in July 2016 and allows you to learn-to-draw more than 80 adorable Disney characters in step-by-step tutorials.

It allows you to learn step-by-step artistic techniques for you to create your own Disney masterpiece. I remember having to pause my Beauty & the Beast VHS just to have a freeze-frame to allow me to draw my favourite Disney character {the Beast!} back in the day. Nowadays you can achieve it with a light-hearted story tutorial {about saving the festival!} and a stylus. Amazing!

My daughter has loved playing with Disney Art Academy and digitally creating artwork of all her favourite Disney characters and all with the help of an amazing step-by-step guide. I think the step-by-step guide is great and helps the artist have confidence in themselves that such masterpieces can be created, even by a beginner.

When you start the game you’re taught how to draw Mickey or Minnie mouse by the Professor. He’ll keep you right on what you need to do to draw each character. It’s not a difficult first task and once completed you can save it to your gallery and even add fun backgrounds to help bring your creation to life. As the game progresses, however, the characters to draw do start to get a bit more complicated, especially when you head into Pixar!

Don’t fret though because you’ll have step-by-step guides along the way and even though the thoughts of adding layers etc to recreate your own 3D digital creation of these characters sounds pretty daunting, I’m sure you can do it. My daughter E really loved recreating Sadness from Inside Out {Don’t you just LOVE that movie!}. I have to say, though, as a fan of programs such as Photoshop and Illustrator I was impressed to see the depth and ability of this game to allow such masterpieces to be created, especially from using tricks from professional programs.

Disney Art Academy comes with 3 game modes; Free drawing, Story & lastly Paint mode. Paint mode is for those who are a little more skilled and something I think will even help my daughter E as she progresses with her High School Art & Design lessons. Especially when it comes to shading it and colouring objects. This is what paint mode is all about.

This game as a whole is much-loved by my daughter and even me. We think it’s great and if you are a huge Disney fan and love to doodle, then this is the game for you. You can purchase the digital version of the game for £29.99 on the Nintendo Store online.

Disclosure: As a Nintendo Family Blogger Ambassador, I was sent this game for the purpose of my review. All thoughts and opinions are 100% my own.
